The Kingdom

Arabia and the House of Sa'ud

By Robert Lacey

Published in 1981 The Kingdom, an inside story of the ruling family, is relevant today. Though many things have changed since 1981, the sons of the founder still rule the country. These sons grew up when Saudi Arabia was a poor land of mostly desert and where the empty quarter personified much of the land. They learned the old ways and are now guiding their country during a period of turmoil, new wealth and new technologies.

This is a story of a family who regards Islam as their nation's most precious resource: Muslim's from all over the world must travel to Mecca in the Hajj during their lifetime if at all able to do so.

But oil is their economic resource; with oil reserves unequaled anywhere else in the world.

The book is laced with anecdotes that would maintain the readers interest even if oil and America's future were not involved.

About the Author:

"Robert Lacey is a British historian noted for his original research, which gets him close to - and often living alongside - his subjects. He is the author of numerous international bestsellers."

"After writing his first works of historical biography, he wrote Majesty, his pioneering biography of Queen Elizabeth II. Published in 1977,  Majesty remains acknowledged as the definitive study of British monarchy - a subject on which the author continues to write and lecture around the world, appearing regularly on ABC's Good Morning America and on CNN's Larry King Live."
